Inspired by the privately minted gold coins struck in Salt Lake City, this replica reflects a unique chapter in American monetary history, when the Latter-day Saints used California Gold Rush gold to create local currency in the Utah Territory between the 1840s and 1860s.
The front features the all-seeing eye of Jehovah, capped by a three-pointed Phrygian crown and surrounded by nine stars, with the inscription “Holiness to the Lord.”
The back depicts two clasped hands symbolizing friendship, along with the denomination “Five Dollars,” the date “1849,” and the inscription “G.S.L.C.P.G.” Which is an abbreviation for Great Salt Lake City Pure Gold.
